Blue House or Red House
Casa Azul or Casa Kahlo?
The Casa Azul and Casa Kahlo are two different Frida Kahlo museums in Coyoacán. What each one is, which ticket covers which, and how to choose.
Choose a time at the Casa Azul ↗Quick answer
The Casa Azul (Blue House) is the Frida Kahlo Museum, the home where she grew up, lived with Diego Rivera and died. Casa Kahlo (Red House) is a separate museum, opened in 2025 in a Kahlo family property, about her family and early life. One resale ticket sells either, so read the option name: only the Frida Kahlo Museum option is the Blue House, and only it includes Anahuacalli.
Two houses, one family name
Coyoacán now has two museums with the Kahlo name, and they are easy to mix up. The Casa Azul, at Londres 247, is the Frida Kahlo Museum: her home, open as a museum since 1958 and run by a trust with the Banco de México as trustee. Casa Kahlo, at Aguayo 54 in the same Del Carmen neighbourhood, opened in late September 2025. It is called the Casa Roja, the Red House, for the colour of its walls. One is the house where she lived and died; the other tells the story of the family she came from.
What the Casa Azul is
The Blue House is where Kahlo grew up, where she lived with Diego Rivera, and where she died in 1954. Its rooms keep her studio with its easel, her bedroom with the mirror above the bed, the yellow-tiled kitchen, the dining room and a garden with a stepped pyramid built for the couple's pre-Hispanic pieces. The museum shows personal objects, dresses, letters, ex-votos, folk art and some of her works. If you have never visited, this is almost certainly the house you have in mind.

What Casa Kahlo is
Casa Kahlo is a family property turned into a museum in a project led by Kahlo's descendants and overseen by the Fundación Kahlo. It focuses on her early years and her family, with a strong emphasis on her father, the photographer Guillermo Kahlo. Its rooms show family objects, letters and photographs, a space on the charity her sister Cristina ran from the house, and a kitchen holding what is described as Frida's only known mural. It also hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary art. It is a new exhibition space, not the artist's home, and it runs independently of the Frida Kahlo Museum.
Which ticket covers which
The resale ticket this site recommends sells either museum, depending on the option you select. The Frida Kahlo Museum option gives fast-track entry to the Casa Azul plus entry to the Anahuacalli Museum. The Casa Kahlo option gives fast-track entry to the Red House only. Both come with a digital guide in English and Spanish, and both are non-refundable. Reviews show some buyers unsure which house their ticket covered, so read the option name on the booking page before you pay.
- Frida Kahlo Museum option: Casa Azul plus Anahuacalli
- Casa Kahlo option: Casa Kahlo only
- Both: digital guide, non-refundable
How to choose
On a first trip to Mexico City, choose the Casa Azul. It is her home and the fuller visit, and its ticket adds Anahuacalli. Choose Casa Kahlo if you have already seen the Blue House, if you are drawn to the family and photography story, or if Casa Azul dates are gone and you would rather see a Kahlo house than none. The two museums run separately, with no joint ticket between them. If you want both, book them as two separate visits.
If Casa Azul dates are gone
Try the museum's own ticket website first, then the two resale routes on this site: the recommended ticket, making sure you select the Frida Kahlo Museum option, and the second Blue House entry ticket, which sometimes shows space on different slots. The guided tour includes museum admission too, and a GetYourGuide booking of it can be dropped at no charge until a day before, so it is a sensible hold while you look. If every Casa Azul date is gone, Casa Kahlo is a real alternative rather than a consolation: a Kahlo family house in the same neighbourhood, with its own story to tell.
Who this isn't for
Casa Kahlo is not a substitute for anyone set on seeing the rooms where Kahlo lived, painted and died: only the Casa Azul has them. The Casa Azul, in turn, will disappoint visitors who mainly want to understand Guillermo Kahlo's photography or the sisters' lives, which Casa Kahlo puts at its centre. And neither suits a traveller who needs a refundable booking, because both options on the resale ticket are non-refundable.
